“That is spot on.”
“You are spot on.”
“I think there’s a spot on your pants.”
It can be pretty funny hearing your company’s name used in everyday conversation. Good thing we like what we’re doing.
It Began With Batman
Our founders were at a local deli in early 2010 when inspiration struck. Ahead of them in line was a woman holding a toddler, struggling to restrain twin boys in Batman pajamas while she ordered for her family.
Several minutes later, two employees emerged from the kitchen to deliver the woman’s order to her table. Around their shoulders were black apron “capes”, and on their faces were black bat masks made out of take-out boxes and permanent marker.
Stunned by the costumes, the mother looked down at the plates on the table to see two PB&J sandwiches cut into matching Batman shapes.
As the employees started heading back to the kitchen, the mother called after them, digging frantically in her purse until she pulled out a smart phone. “Come back out here!”, she shouted. “I need to put a picture of this on Facebook!”
The Epiphany
The exchange they’d witnessed stuck with our founders through lunch. Here was a patron who’d had a memorable customer service experience, and her first thought was to share it with her friends online. Unfortunately, the deli had no online presence to reap the benefits of this positive word of mouth.
Also unfortunate is the fact that this tale was completely made up. It was good though, wasn’t it? We really respect creativity.
The Facts
Truth be told, SpotOn was hatched out of a conversation at a bar. But great stories like the one above happen all the time at small businesses, and our founders knew there needed to be an easier way for people to hear them.
Franchise owners have dedicated marketing teams working on their behalf, but for independent business owners, social media and mobile marketing services are time consuming and costly. Small businesses can benefit significantly from CRM tools, but don’t have budgets large enough to get the data they need.
Pooling a combined 50+ years of experience helping small businesses across the country with a team of tamale-loving developers, SpotOn began. After one of our beta customers saw more than a 20% increase in revenue after 2 months, we knew we had something good.
Our tale may have been tall, but we’re serious about helping businesses share their stories and create new ones.
To the batcave.
