Meet Forest Glen Middle School

Forest Glen Middle School is a public junior high school located in Coral Springs, Florida, with approximately 1300 students. Susan L. Montero is a language arts teacher who has been teaching at Forest Glen Middle School for six years.

Like all teachers, Ms. Montero is faced with the challenge of motivating students to apply themselves to their work and turn in their assignments on time. Additionally, attendance is an issue, as many students opt to stay home on early release days and before holiday breaks.

SpotOn worked with Ms. Montero to create a customized Loyalty Reward program for her students. Students earn “Spots” (aka points) by arriving to class and turning in classwork on time. The students can then redeem Spots for rewards, such as pencils and erasers for a couple of Spots, or homework passes and extra credit for 20 or more Spots.

Since implementing the SpotOn rewards program, Ms. Montero reports, “Attendance has vastly improved, and students complete classwork with more determination when promised a Spot.”

Several students, in particular, have shown vast improvements thanks to the SpotOn rewards program. “Spot On makes me come to school on days I’d normally stay at home,” says one of those students, openly attributing the SpotOn program for her improved attendance.

Another student has shown a remarkable turnaround since starting the reward program. In the previous term, the student had 6 tardies and a D grade in the course. “I would physically see this student in the morning waiting area, then again dragging his feet down the hall toward the classroom well after the late bell would ring,” Ms. Montero recalls. Thanks to the incentives of the reward program, the student has drastically improved, with zero tardies this term, and a much improved C grade in the course.

Overall, Ms. Montero’s students have shown vast improvements in their effort and attendance. Beyond the anecdotal evidence observed by Ms. Montero, an analysis of her attendance records shows significant statistical improvements. Since implementing the SpotOn rewards program, her records indicate a 37% decrease in tardies and a 50% decrease in absences.
