I run two restaurants alongside my work at SpotOn, so I don't need a survey to tell me that a good week doesn't always mean a good bank balance. I've had weekends where the line ran out the door until noon and still spent Tuesday morning doing math I didn't want to do, because the money from the weekend hadn't cleared.

Restaurants don't fail simply because the food is bad or the room is empty. More often, they fail because the money comes in on its own schedule and the bills don't wait for it. Payroll doesn't check your batch settlement times. Vendors don't care that Saturday was slow. A walk-in cooler doesn't wait for a convenient time to break.

To help ease cash flow, operators have traditionally taken whatever loan they could get, often at a rate that cost more than the problem it was meant to fix. Or worse, they got into a debt spiral with merchant cash advances.

We built SpotOn's financial technology stack because we didn't think a well-run restaurant should have to choose between missing an opportunity and paying a predatory rate to seize it. Here's what that stack really does.

When you need to invest: SpotOn Capital

SpotOn Capital1 is working capital that's priced and structured around how a restaurant earns money. You pay one fixed fee, not compounding interest, and repayment comes out as a share of your daily sales, so it eases up when business is slow instead of squeezing you at the worst possible time. There are no application fees, no processing fees, no late fees, and no "additional" fees hiding in the agreement.

Because Capital is built into SpotOn and underwritten off your real sales data, approved funds can land in your account in as little as one business day. And because it's priced off performance, we've been able to offer rates that run about 20% cheaper on average than competitors for loans over $10,000 refinanced from another provider.2

Ryan Shulick, owner of No Name Hospitality, shared that SpotOn Capital has been a huge help in getting his restaurant group's new projects open without putting extra strain on their existing locations. And that's exactly why we do this: capital for a remodel, a new location, or payroll during a slow stretch, whatever you need, you can finance it on your terms.

When the money's already yours: Rapid Fund

What gets me is that the money sitting in a "pending" batch is already yours. You earned it. SpotOn Rapid Fund gets that money into your account faster, depositing card sales in under 30 minutes after you batch out, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends, and holidays. No waiting for a bank to open on Monday to cover a Saturday night payroll.

It's also priced fairly: just 0.2% per deposit, a small fraction of what instant-deposit options from other platforms charge. That's the difference between a tool you use occasionally in an emergency and one that just becomes how you manage cash flow, permanently.

When your team needs their tips now: DayCheck

The same timing problem that hits us as owners also hits our employees, just from the other direction. Tipped staff earn money every shift and then either get paid out in cash or have to wait days, sometimes weeks, to get paid out the tips they earned via payroll. With DayCheck we close that gap: once tips are approved, they land in an employee's digital wallet the same day, ready to spend on the SpotOn Card with no fees. Or if they prefer to have their tip payouts transferred to their own bank account, they can do so for free with a standard transfer, or faster for a small fee.

For eligible SpotOn operators, DayCheck doesn't require pre-funding tip balances so it protects your cash flow instead of straining it, and there's no added software cost to offer it. We’re also expanding DayCheck availability beyond SpotOn Teamwork to include restaurants using our 7shifts integration or the tip management tools already built into SpotOn POS, so more restaurants can offer faster tips without changing how they manage labor.

Amir Harpaz, owner of The Mudpuppy, put it simply: "Servers get their tips daily. It's so smooth. By the time they get home from a shift, money is in their bank account. People stand in line to work here and get paid daily."

In an industry where turnover is a constant fight, earned wage access has been shown to meaningfully improve retention and make it easier to fill open roles, and DayCheck is our version of that, built for how restaurants run tip payout.

What the gap actually costs

It's easy to talk about cash flow gaps in the abstract, so let me put real numbers to a few examples.

Say you do $8,000 in card sales over a slow-to-bank weekend, and your liquor distributor shows up Monday morning expecting a $3,000 COD on delivery. With standard funding, that weekend money might not land until Tuesday if it is a holiday, so you’re either moving money from a personal account, floating it on a credit card, or asking the driver to come back. With Rapid Fund, each batch lands within 30 minutes of closing out. The fee is 0.2%, so it’s just $16 to ensure your $8,000 weekend is there before the truck leaves.

Now let’s talk about loans. Say you take out a $20,000 loan to replace a walk-in, either from a traditional lender or from your existing POS provider at a 22.49% fee rate, which is typical of what we see from competitors. That’s $4,497 in fees. By switching to SpotOn and refinancing with SpotOn Capital, you’d likely save 20% or more. That’s $900 back in your pocket, cash that can cover a few extra shifts instead of going to fees.

Another area where having cash on hand is helpful is managing your labor costs. Research from Cornell's Center for Hospitality Research puts the average cost of replacing a single hourly restaurant employee at $5,864, considering recruiting, training, and the productivity hit taken while new staff gets up to speed. DayCheck can help you retain your staff by giving teams access to same-day tips at no cost to the restaurant. Staff can spend them free right from the SpotOn Card or pay a 1% (min $0.95, max $2.95) rapid-transfer fee to move tips straight to their bank account. If daily tips are part of the reason one good server stays, that’s nearly $6,000 a restaurant saves on re-filling the position.

The small leaks add up

Sixteen dollars on a weekend. About $900 on a refinance. Nearly $6,000 when a good server stays. It’s easy to ignore each on their own. And that’s the thing, slow access to cash rarely shows up all at once. They happen during the rush, when decisions are made under pressure, week after week.

SpotOn Capital, Rapid Fund, and DayCheck help ease these pressures from three different angles: the money you need, the money you’ve already made, and the money your team earned last night. Cash flow shouldn't be the reason a good restaurant has a bad month. I still do the Tuesday math at my own restaurants, and it’s the test I use for the financial technology we build at SpotOn: would it have made that morning easier?
